British Schools Gymnastics Sports Acrobatics Finals

Over the weekend of the 30th April and 1st May, gymnasts and coaches traveled down to Stoke-on-Trent to compete at the British Gymnastics Sports Acrobatics Finals. As a result of the East Regional Final in February, 3 pairs of acrobats qualified for National finals this weekend. Jon G and Viraj S won the U11 Boys pairs in the East and advanced to Nationals. They were well prepared but nerves got the better of them and they did not hold their first balance for the necessary 3 seconds. Despite settling into a calmer frame of mind after that mistake it was difficult for them to recover but they finished 5th in their category. These boys are still only in Year 4 so have 2 more years in this age group.

Finn H and Connie T had qualified in the U11 mixed pairs and as year 5s still have another year in this age group. Competition was extremely tough but they were composed, stretched and very professional in their approach to the competition. They beat some sound performances to finish in 5th place in their category.

Sam B attended last year’s final with his partner Inigo Carmichael and finished in Silver medal position behind an incredible pair from Ivybridge College in the South West. Sam returned to Stoke with his new partner, Guy N and the two found themselves face to face with last year’s champions from Ivybridge. Our boys performed with athleticism, precision and strength. They were incredible competitors and earned 8.2 for their routine. 8.8 was awarded to their rivals from Ivybridge and the boys happily took home silver medals. The Ivybridge boys are currently in Year 8 so Sam is likely to have to challenge them for each year of his school life. Every competition will provide a new opportunity to improve and close the 0.6 gap. It is hoped that Sam will continue to compete, back with his previous partner, Inigo, when he moves to The Leys in September.

All in all the weekend was a great success and we came home with a national medal which was a fantastic result for St Faiths.

Many thanks must also go to the coaches and staff who helped over the weekend, it would not have worked without you.
