This week at St Faith's

27 September 2019

Buenos dias! Bonjour! Guten Tag! Hej! Zdravstvuj! International greetings from across the world were celebrated by the Languages Department this week as we embraced the spirit of European Day of Language.

New pupils and their families from the Pre Prep certainly had a chance to practise their greetings to each other as they enjoyed the splendid weather at our annual Scavenger Hunt last Saturday. Hosted by the ever committed St Faith’s Parents’ Association, the morning offered a delightful way for new families to get their bearings in our large school grounds, to meet one another and to make friends who will be with them for their journey through St Faith’s.

Chariots of Fire

Twenty-two colleagues (plus 2 partners) made a record four staff teams for St Faith’s at the annual Chariots of Fire event in Cambridge on Sunday morning. We fielded two mixed teams plus an SMT team and a Pre Prep team. The 1.7 miles relay course included Silver Street,  King’s Parade,  The Backs and Clare College. As usual, St Faith’s supporters convened on Silver Street Bridge under a St Faith’s school banner. Each St Faith’s runner was wonderfully supported with rousing cheers (the loudest from Mrs North) from the waiting participants and spectators. Very well done to everyone who took part.

Evensong at Newton Church

On Sunday afternoon, 14 of our Senior Voices choir joined the choir at St Margaret’s Church, Newton, for their Harvest Festival Evensong.  Singing Rutter’s ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ and Stanford’s ‘Magnificat’, the choir sounded appropriately magnificent.  Clearly the pupils and the regular members of St Margaret’s choir all delighted in the experience.

Year 8 Technical Theatre

This week the Drama Enrichment group in Year 8 visited Great Hall at The Leys for a professional technical theatrical taster session, which focussed on lighting, sound and make-up. Pupils had hands-on experience of rigging theatre lights, amplifying sound and learning how to apply stage make-up. With brightly painted faces, coloured and focused lanterns and music turned up, our rock stars blasted ‘We Will Rock You’ into the auditorium. Many thanks to the wonderful Leys staff for making this possible. The children had an experience that won’t be forgotten.

Year 7 Technical Drawing at Zoology Museum

Year 7 pupils immersed themselves in the details of observational drawing on Thursday afternoon when they visited the Museum of Zoology.  Using the objects on display in the museum the children honed their sketching skills as they captured images of butterflies, dragonflies and other species.

Wine Tasting for Makukhanye

No doubt a number of you are reading this while you get ready to attend our Makukhanye fundraising wine tasting evening tonight.  Presented by Noel Young Wines the evening should prove a very convivial way of raising funds for our partner school, Makukhanye.  I wish all of those attending an enjoyable evening.

And finally…

Our budding Year 4 engineers put their classwork into practice this week when they spontaneously built a bridge out of wooden blocks in the playground.  So sturdy was their structure that it was even capable of bearing the weight of an eight-year old.  Our Engineering teachers, Dr Hoyle and Mrs Oxborough, were no doubt suitably impressed.

With all good wishes,

Nigel Helliwell
