Obituary: Professor David Thouless
It is with great sadness that we announce that Old Fidelian, Professor David Thouless, passed away on 6th April 2019 aged 84.
David left St Faith’s in 1947 but came back to visit the school just last year with fellow classmate John Cawley. After leaving St Faith’s David attended Winchester College on a scholarship and then read Natural Sciences at Trinity Hall, Cambridge before commencing a PhD in Physics at Cornell in the USA.
In 2016 Professor Thouless was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his theoretical discoveries of Toplogical Phase transitions and Topological Phases of Matter. He collected his Nobel Prize from H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in Stockholm Concert Hall on 10th December 2016.
