St Faith’s Celebrates Year 8 at Speech Day 2021

In a first for St Faith’s, Speech Day 2021 took on a hybrid mode on the last day of term as Year 8 and their parents were joined in the marquee by the Headmaster, Chair of Governors and Guest of Honour while the rest of the school watched via Live Stream into their classes and parents watched from home.

This was a poignant Speech Day, not only for our wonderful Year 8 pupils leaving us for pastures new at senior schools, but also for retiring Headmaster, Nigel Helliwell, who stepped down after 10 years as Headmaster.

Guest of Honour this year was Sir Mene Pangalos, Executive Vice President of AstraZeneca, who imparted wise words to our outgoing pupils on working hard, loving what you do, being resilient and doing what you know is right even in the face of adversity. Interwoven in his speech were his experiences of the past 18 months in developing a vaccine for Covid-19.

In fitting St Faith’s style, Mr Helliwell and his wife Jane were treated to a suprise whistle stop tour of the school by golf buggy as Speech Day ended, where he was greeted along the way by pupils, teachers, catering, house-keeping, maintenance and office staff, all wishing him well in a Covid secure manner.
