St Faith’s U13 Boys Win Cambridgeshire County Cup
It has been an action packed and highly successful season for our U13 boys’ hockey players, who represented St Faith’s at the Cambridgeshire County Cup Tournament with determination, skill and outstanding teamwork.
The tournament took place at Cambridge University Hockey and Athletics Centre at Wilberforce Road and after the recent success of the U12 Boys’ reaching the quarterfinals of the IAPS national finals at the end of January, it was the turn of the U13 boys to show their mettle!
Mr Johnson, Head of Hockey wrote,
“The boys began the day in bitterly cold conditions and made a slow start against a robust and energetic Kimbolton side. Despite dominating possession and creating several promising chances, St Faith’s were caught twice on the break. Although they responded with renewed intensity and pulled a goal back, the match ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat.
With renewed focus and confidence provided by hockey coach Mr Thompson, himself a former Olympian, the boys stepped up superbly. What followed was a series of calm and disciplined performances.
- 2–0 win against Saffron Walden County High
- 2–0 win against The Perse Upper
- 3–1 win against King’s Cambridge
- 3–0 win against Stephen Perse
These results set up a thrilling final match against St John’s. Both teams entered the decisive fixture level on points, level on goal difference and equally determined to claim the title.
In a gripping contest, St Faith’s produced their strongest hockey of the entire day. A beautifully executed short corner routine resulted in a superb deflection that flew past the St John’s goalkeeper. A second goal followed and sealed a 2-0 win!
The team will now progress to represent Cambridgeshire Hockey in the East of England round on Friday, 13th March in Ipswich. This is a remarkable achievement and a very exciting opportunity for the squad.”
