Music
Music is at once joyous and reflective, allowing for the expression of deep feeling and rich emotion whether through listening, composing or performing.
My vision for the Music Department is for all children to enjoy a broad music education that promotes a life-long love of music. All pupils have classroom Music lessons taught by specialist teachers and are introduced to a wide variety of music which they experience through listening, appraising, performing and composing.
My emphasis is on enjoyment and appreciation whilst covering a wide variety of topics. These include the basics of musical notation, singing, composition, improvisation and performing as well as studying some Western Music History, World Music, Jazz and contemporary music.
Every child sings, and individual tuition is available on all orchestral instruments as well as piano, singing, guitar and drum kit, including preparation for Trinity College London, Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Rockschool exams. Instrumentalists and singers are invited to play in one or more of our many ensembles, and numerous performance opportunities occur throughout the year. Our Music Department works closely with the Drama department, with all children taking part in musical productions during their time at the School. The Senior Concert takes place at the University Concert Hall in West Road and there are opportunities to tour both in the UK and abroad.
Highly talented musicians have opportunities to perform on a wider stage and are encouraged to participate in regional and national events, while also being prepared for senior school scholarships.
